The Medaram Jatara is a four-day festival honoring the tribal goddesses Sammakka and Saralamma, who are revered for their bravery and sacrifice in fighting against injustice. The festival commemorates their struggle against the Kakatiya rulers in the 13th century. Legend says that Sammakka and her daughter Saralamma fought valiantly against the king's army when he imposed heavy taxes on the tribal people. Their story of courage and resistance continues to inspire generations. While visiting the grounds outside the Jatara period, you can explore the area where the festival takes place, imagining the immense crowds and vibrant celebrations. You can visit the nearby Sammakka Saralamma Temple, the focal point of the festival. The area offers a unique opportunity to learn about tribal customs, traditions, and beliefs. During the Jatara, devotees offer jaggery (bellam) to the goddesses, which is then distributed as prasadam (blessed food). Transportation
Reaching Medaram can be challenging, especially outside the Jatara period. The nearest major railway station is Warangal, approximately 110 km away. From Warangal, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Medaram. During the Jatara, special buses are operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) from various cities and towns in Telangana and neighboring states.
